Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has avoided commenting on the recent criticism of President William Ruto by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB). Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, November 15, Odinga stated he would address the issue at a later date, focusing on other matters during the current session.
When asked about the bishops’ strong words against Ruto’s administration, particularly their accusations of lies, extrajudicial killings, and corruption, Raila responded, “I will do another statement generally, where you can ask general questions. Today is about this issue of revenue care.”
The bishops, led by Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, had criticized the Kenya Kwanza government for failing to address key issues, including taxation, unemployment, the CBC education system, and the ongoing transition from NHIF to the Social Health Authority (SHA). The Catholic leaders also accused the political class of ignoring the concerns of the Kenyan people.
In response, President Ruto, during a visit to Tangaza University, urged leaders to stick to facts when engaging in public discourse, warning against making unverified claims. He also expressed disappointment over the bishops’ criticism, pointing out that they had been supportive of him before the 2022 election and questioning their shift in stance.
The bishops’ statement has sparked mixed reactions from political leaders, with some accusing the church of double standards, especially considering their previous backing of Ruto.
