NAIROBI, Kenya .

Preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) are in full swing as Kenya rushes to upgrade its sports facilities to meet international standards.

Renovation work at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium is progressing steadily, with officials confident the venues will be ready on time.

At Kasarani, the installation of new seats and an expanded roof is on schedule.

The stadium, with a capacity of 55,000, is being equipped with upgraded floodlights and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, during a site visit in late November, expressed optimism about meeting the January 31 deadline, stating that contractors are working around the clock.

President William Ruto recently assured CAF officials of Kenya’s readiness to host the tournament.

In a meeting with CAF President Patrice Motsepe at State House, Nairobi, Ruto emphasized the country’s commitment to delivering a successful event.

“We are on track to not only meet but exceed expectations for CHAN 2025,” Ruto said.

Comparisons to Uganda and Tanzania, co-hosts for the tournament, reveal a competitive but collaborative spirit in the region.

Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam has been lauded for its readiness, while Uganda has made significant progress in upgrading its facilities.

CAF officials have expressed confidence in all three countries but have reminded stakeholders of the strict deadlines to ensure tournament readiness.

Kenya faces challenges, including speculation about possible delays.

Reports suggest Rwanda could take over hosting rights if Kenya fails to meet the timeline, but CAF has dismissed these concerns, reiterating their confidence in Kenya’s preparations.

The successful hosting of CHAN 2025 is viewed as a stepping stone for Kenya and the East African region, which is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

For now, the race against time continues, with the December 31 deadline looming.

About CHAN 2025:

CHAN, a biennial tournament for home-based players, offers a platform to showcase local talent.

This marks Kenya’s first opportunity to host the event, underscoring its growing role in African football.
