Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has issued a stirring pledge to the team’s supporters, declaring Friday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Zimbabwe a “do-or-die” game. Speaking after the team’s final training session at Peter Makoba Stadium, Olunga expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to secure the three vital points needed to keep their qualification hopes alive.
“This is a do-or-die game for us,” Olunga stated. “We know the expectations on our shoulders, and we’re ready to put in the maximum effort. We’ll minimise mistakes and be more effective in the final third.”
With Kenya trailing Zimbabwe by four points in Group J, the Stars face an uphill battle. A win is essential to stay in the race for a spot in Morocco, and they will also need to defeat Namibia in their final group match. Despite the setbacks in their previous fixtures, Olunga remains optimistic, saying, “In football, you never give up until the last minute. There is still a chance for us to make it to Morocco.”
Olunga also addressed the issue of home support, acknowledging that the team hasn’t played in front of their fans for three years. However, he insisted the players must focus on delivering a performance that makes their supporters proud, despite the absence of a home crowd. “We are now used to playing without fans, and we can’t use that as an excuse,” he said. “We must reward our fans with a smile because they are expecting a lot from us.”
