Maize farmers in Trans Nzoia are expressing frustration over plummeting prices as the harvest season kicks off. Currently, a 90kg bag of maize is selling for KSh 2,500, the lowest price in four years, compared to last year’s KSh 4,200 from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Farmers like Stephen Mugo from Keiyo ward are concerned about their inability to cover farming costs and are calling for government intervention to address the situation. Mugo stated, “Right now, even 10 bags can’t give you KSh 30,000,” emphasizing the rising costs of farming.
Chesang Melly from Kwanza urged farmers not to sell their produce to brokers at undervalued prices and to wait for the NCPB to announce better rates. Meanwhile, traders like Eunice Wamboi are facing low supply issues due to farmers holding back their produce, which could lead to price increases if shortages persist.
With the NCPB yet to announce new prices, uncertainty looms over the maize market, leaving farmers anxious about their financial futures.
