DCI Seeks Charges Against Gachagua’s Allies Over Gen-Z Protests

By Mwibanda

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recommended that several associates of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua face charges related to violent anti-government protests that occurred on June 25, 2024. This follows an intelligence report indicating their involvement in planning, mobilizing, and financing the unrest.

Among those targeted are two MPs and Gachagua’s aides, who are accused of conspiracy to commit a felony. One MP also faces additional money laundering charges. Investigations revealed that meetings at a Nairobi hotel were held to coordinate the protests, which began peacefully but escalated into violence and looting.

Police are looking into financial transactions linked to these individuals and are preparing a case for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). This comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the possible impeachment of Gachagua, who has denied any wrongdoing by his aides and labeled the allegations a political betrayal.

President William Ruto had previously described the protests, led predominantly by Gen-Z activists, as initially peaceful before being exploited by criminals. The protests were sparked by discontent over rising living costs and proposed tax increases, resulting in significant casualties and injuries during the unrest.
