BUNGOMA, Kenya .
A South Bukusu resident has slammed the local MCA and the Bungoma County Government for neglecting key public services, including education and health, while calling on Senator David Wakoli to intervene.
Dennis Kokonya, a vocal community member, accused elected leaders of abandoning their responsibilities. He said the area has only three secondary schools — Muanda, Mateka, and Lumboka — serving 19 polling centers.
“This is a large, densely populated area, yet it’s grossly underserved,” Kokonya said.
He compared South Bukusu to neighboring Musikoma Ward in Kanduyi Constituency, where most primary schools are matched with secondary schools. He warned that such inequality keeps the community trapped in ignorance.
“We must ask: who wants us to stay ignorant so they can benefit from our disadvantage?” he asked.
Kokonya also raised alarm over a dumpsite located in a residential area. He said it poses serious health risks and that the MCA, who was elected on a promise to relocate it, has failed to act.
“Our MCA promised to move the dumpsite with help from the county government. It hasn’t happened,” he said. “Now our children are getting sick. The air is toxic. The leadership is to blame.”
He appealed to Senator David Wakoli to step in and help push for the dumpsite’s relocation to a safer site.
Blending spiritual conviction with civic criticism, Kokonya urged leaders to serve with humility and integrity. “Let us not let our Christ down by idolizing material wealth and ignoring the suffering of our people,” he said.
Repeated efforts to reach the MCA for comment were unsuccessful.
Kokonya’s statement adds to growing frustration over what many see as chronic neglect and broken promises in Bungoma’s rural wards.
