In a historic development for traditional leadership in Africa, INZU YA MASAABA has proudly joined the African Traditional Leaders and Kings Forum.
This alliance highlights the evolving role of traditional institutions in preserving cultural heritage and promoting regional cooperation.
The Inzu ya Masaaba kingdom, representing the Bagishu of Eastern Uganda, Babukusu of Western Kenya, and several other Kenyan communities, was formally inducted into the African Traditional Leaders and Kings Forum on August 3, 2024.
His Highness Torgbi Amenya Fiti V, President of the African Traditional Leaders and Kings Forum, officially welcomed Umukuuka Jude Mike Mudoma of the Bamasaaba into the forum at a ceremony coinciding with the launch of the Bamasaaba circumcision season.
Addressing over 20,000 attendees, King Fiti emphasized the forum’s commitment to Pan-Africanism through cultural integration, aimed at countering neo-colonialism and promoting Africa’s cultural resilience.
In a symbolic gesture of inclusion, Umukuuka Mudoma was dressed in traditional Ashanti attire from Ghana by an aide of King Fiti V, signifying the Bamasaaba’s formal entry into the forum.
This prestigious membership places the Bamasaaba kingdom on par with other historic African kingdoms, including those in Swaziland, Buganda, Ghana, Nigeria, and Morocco.
Umukuuka Mudoma praised the Bamasaaba community for respecting his call to begin circumcising initiates within a designated timeframe.
He noted that the Imbalu ceremony will continue as a unifying tradition and anticipates it will grow into a significant global cultural attraction.
He also commended the community for heeding his directive to prevent early circumcision practices and to respect the practices of neighboring communities.
Phillip Wekesa Wanyonyi, Umukuuka’s ambassador for resource mobilization, expressed ambitions for future Imbalu ceremonies, stating, “Imbalu 2024 has been a success, but we aim for an even grander celebration in 2026, potentially rivaling Brazil’s famous carnival.”
Distinguished guests, including King Suanu Timothy of the Gbenemene of Nigeria, King Peter Mumia of Kenya’s Wanga Kingdom, and various leaders from Teso, Lango, and Acholi, witnessed this landmark event.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, represented by Hon. John Mulimba, and opposition leader Bobi Wine both contributed to the event, underscoring its national significance.
A notable delegation of Kenyan Bamasaaba officials, including Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, Women MP Catherine Wambilianga, and the Bungoma County Assembly Speaker, joined in the celebration, further solidifying cross-border unity.
The African Traditional Leaders and Kings Forum serves as a prestigious network dedicated to preserving Africa’s cultural heritage while addressing modern challenges.
INZU YA MASAABA’s inclusion affirms its esteemed position and the increasing importance of traditional leadership in Africa’s development.
The official induction ceremony will take place in Nairobi on August 30, 2024, bringing together traditional leaders from across the continent.
This event will honor INZU YA MASAABA’s new role, facilitating strategic discussions on pressing issues like education, family values, community development, and cultural preservation.
As INZU YA MASAABA joins forces with its counterparts, this new chapter represents more than just membership; it is a powerful alliance dedicated to celebrating and advancing Africa’s rich cultural legacy.
Ends.
