Azimio Appoints Kalonzo as New Leader as Raila Seeks AU Chair Position: New Alliance Involving Gen Z on the Horizon

Leaders express confidence in Kalonzo Musyoka’s ability to guide Azimio into a new era, with a focus on engaging Gen Z.

Azimio’s co-principals have officially appointed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new leader of the coalition. This significant transition comes as Raila Odinga steps down to pursue the position of chairperson for the African Union Commission.

The announcement was made shortly after the official launch of Raila’s candidacy at State House, Nairobi. Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the DAP-K party and a prominent figure within Azimio, voiced strong support for Kalonzo’s new role. Wamalwa reassured that Azimio would continue to thrive and remain a unified force under Kalonzo’s leadership.

“In Azimio, there will be no vacuum. We are a coalition with several constituent parties and have been fortunate to have strong leadership. As Raila steps away, the next senior leader in our coalition is Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka,” Wamalwa stated.

Wamalwa highlighted Kalonzo’s extensive qualifications, including his previous role as Vice President and his broad diplomatic experience. He expressed full confidence in Kalonzo’s ability to lead Azimio effectively and build upon the coalition’s legacy.

“As Raila leaves for Addis Ababa, Azimio will not only maintain its leadership but grow stronger,” Wamalwa assured.

In a notable development, Azimio is set to convene a crucial meeting today at Ufungamano House. The meeting will center on incorporating Gen Z into a new alliance coalition, which forms a core part of their main agenda. The coalition aims to engage the younger generation, alongside the private sector and civil society, to address pressing issues such as constitutional defense and education.

Wamalwa praised Raila for his impactful leadership, acknowledging his near success in the 2022 presidential election. “Raila will continue to be ‘Baba’ to us,” he said.

The official launch of Raila’s AU candidacy took place on Tuesday at Nairobi State House, with President William Ruto and leaders from Tanzania and Uganda in attendance. A subsequent press conference at the SK Command Centre emphasized the coalition’s support for Raila’s new role.

“In acknowledging Raila’s departure to continental duties, we assure Kenyans that there will be no leadership void in our opposition. We thank him for his remarkable leadership and support,” Wamalwa added.

Raila is vying for the AU Commission chairmanship against contenders from Djibouti, Mauritius, and Madagascar, requiring backing from 34 countries to win in the first round of voting.
