Kenya’s Education Ministry has ordered disciplinary action against the principal of Alliance Girls High School.
The ministry has disbanded its board of management after an investigation uncovered an unauthorized and sharply increased fee structure.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed the Teachers Service Commission to take action against Principal Margaret Njeru, citing violations of the Basic Education Act 2013.
According to the ministry, the school increased fees from the approved KSh53,558 to KSh120,179 without the legally required approval from education authorities, placing a significant financial burden on parents.
An assessment by the ministry’s Quality Assurance and Standards Directorate found that the school’s board had approved a budget containing non-essential and unrealistic expenditure items,
contributing to the hike. These included allocations for trips, prize-giving activities and administrative allowances.
The report also flagged a plan to spend about KSh25 million on a five-day staff trip abroad, with school management expected to cover a funding shortfall, raising concerns about financial prudence.
Dr. Ogamba said the board failed in its oversight role and ordered its dissolution, directing regional education officials to escalate the matter to the county education board for further action in line with the law.
The case underscores growing scrutiny by Kenyan authorities on school fee structures, particularly in public institutions where fees are regulated to ensure affordability and compliance with national education policies.
