Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has criticized internal moves to strip Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of his party responsibilities, warning that rushed decisions could divide the Orange Democratic Movement at a critical political moment.
Speaking on a vernacular FM radio program today ,Wanyonyi described the action against Sifuna as “selfish,” maintaining that the party must remain true to its identity even as it participates in the broad-based government arrangement.
“Baba Raila Odinga led us into the Broad-Based Government, but he was clear that ODM must remain ODM,” Wanyonyi said. “What Sifuna says reflects the official stand of the party.”
Sifuna has gained prominence within ODM circles for openly resisting any shift that could be interpreted as the party being absorbed into President William Ruto’s administration.
His supporters argue he is defending the party’s core principles and safeguarding its opposition voice, while critics accuse him of undermining internal unity.
The dispute reflects a broader debate within ODM about strategy and identity ahead of the 2027 general election.
Senior leaders aligned with the broad-based government framework, including Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, have defended cooperation with the government as a pragmatic move aimed at maintaining influence in national affairs.
Political analysts say the internal wrangles underscore deeper questions about ODM’s future direction — whether to maintain a hard opposition stance or adopt a more collaborative approach within government structures.
The unfolding rift signals a defining moment for the party as it navigates leadership dynamics and prepares for the next electoral cycle.
