Uganda’s Electoral Commission says President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is cruising toward another term, holding what can only be described as a “comfortable village lead” in the 2026 presidential election — comfortable enough to make the opposition reach for strong tea and even stronger statements.
According to provisional results, Museveni has collected 7,643,778 votes, or 71.88%, while his closest challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform, follows with 2,601,150 votes, or 24.26%.
With counting still ongoing, the gap suggests Museveni is not just leading — he’s practically lapping the field, like a boda boda on an empty Kampala road at midnight.
Other candidates remain in the race, at least on paper, with single-digit vote shares.
The vote comes after weeks of tension, heavy security presence and communication restrictions that left many Ugandans wondering whether they were voting in an election or participating in a nationwide hide-and-seek championship.
Kyagulanyi’s supporters have rejected the provisional tally, saying the numbers don’t reflect the will of the people. Museveni’s camp, meanwhile, says the results show exactly what they expected: that Ugandans “appreciate stability” — and possibly have a long memory.
Final certified results are expected once the Electoral Commission completes the national count.
