President William Ruto on Tuesday met a delegation of Trans Nzoia political leaders at the State Lodge in Eldoret, a move widely interpreted as a strategic effort to reshape the county’s political balance ahead of the next general election.
The engagement comes at a time when Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is increasingly aligning himself with the opposition and emerging as a key figure in the Tawe movement — a posture that has widened the political distance between him and the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Although details of the closed-door meeting were not publicly disclosed, its political significance was unmistakable.
The presence of Trans Nzoia leaders at the State Lodge signaled the presidency’s intent to cultivate alternative leadership aligned with the national government in a county where loyalty to the ruling coalition appears uncertain.
The meeting is widely seen as a boost for Kiminini MP Kakai Bissau, who has openly declared his intention to challenge Governor Natembeya in the next general election.
For Bissau, the Eldoret engagement reinforced his growing profile as a pro–Kenya Kwanza contender positioning himself as an alternative to the incumbent governor.
Bissau’s political standing is further strengthened by his long-standing association with Ford Kenya party leader and National Assembly Speaker Dr. Moses Wetang’ula, one of President Ruto’s closest allies and a central figure in the ruling coalition.
As a trusted Wetang’ula ally, Bissau benefits from established party structures and influence across the Western Kenya region, factors analysts say could prove decisive in a gubernatorial contest.
The contrast between the two camps is becoming increasingly clear: Governor Natembeya anchoring himself in opposition politics and Bissau aligning closely with national power through Ford Kenya and Kenya Kwanza leadership.
For President Ruto, the Eldoret meeting reflects a broader strategy of consolidating allies in politically fluid regions.
For Trans Nzoia, it marks the early formation of a high-stakes contest in which national alignment, opposition politics and regional influence are set to define the road to 2027.
