A 12-year-old girl from Bungoma has qualified to represent Africa at the World Chess Championships in Kazakhstan.
Miriam Paraam, a Grade 5 student at Bungoma DEB Primary School, earned her spot after winning at the African championships held in South Africa.
Speaking at the school while sending her off, Bungoma DEB Principal Tobia Khisa congratulated Miriam for her resilience and success.
“We are proud that she has uplifted the name of our school and wish her well as she represents Africa,” Khisa said.
He urged parents to support their children’s talents alongside academics so they can realize their dreams.
Chess Kenya Federation officials, led by Wekesa Sammy, pledged to stand by Miriam in her journey.
“As a federation, we are committed to mobilize partners and facilitate her participation in all competitions,” Wekesa said.
Her coach, Humphrey Nyongesa, praised the school for its role in promoting the sport and nurturing young talent.
Miriam’s mother, Rosemary Opara, appealed for financial support, noting that the girl’s father who had been her main supporter, died while she was competing in South Africa.
“Her father passed on when she had gone to compete. He never got the chance to celebrate his daughter’s victory,” Opara said.
Miriam has now been flagged off to represent Africa at the World Chess Championships in Kazakhstan.
