Team Luketelo

As the 2026 KUPPET elections draw nearer, political winds are shifting within the Bungoma County branch.
New alliances and strategic realignments are beginning to shape the direction of the union, signaling both continuity and change in the leadership structure.
With the education landscape evolving rapidly, the role of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is more critical than ever—especially in safeguarding the rights and welfare of teachers amid national reforms.
At the center of this unfolding political terrain is Mr. Luketelo, the current Executive Chairman of KUPPET Bungoma.
A seasoned leader, Luketelo has steered the union through a series of key reforms over the years, reinforcing teacher representation at both the county and national levels.
His leadership has been marked by a commitment to addressing teachers’ welfare, advocating for fair remuneration, and protecting the professional dignity of educators.
However, as the union faces new challenges—particularly with the integration of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers—there is an urgent call for a generational transition in leadership.
JSS teachers, many of whom are millennial and Gen Z educators, continue to encounter structural, administrative and contractual issues even after joining the union.
Addressing these concerns will require not only experienced leadership but also fresh ideas and youth-driven energy.
Recognizing this, Mr. Luketelo is reportedly open to ushering in a new wave of leadership, tapping into the dynamism of young professionals to revitalize the union.
Among the emerging voices is Maurice Kimungui, a vocal advocate for teacher empowerment and one of the rising figures representing a “third force” within the union politics of Bungoma County.
Kimungui and others like him bring not just youthful enthusiasm but also a practical understanding of the unique challenges facing today’s educators.
The coming months are expected to witness the formation of new coalitions—alliances that blend experience with innovation.
If managed well, this strategic mix could propel KUPPET Bungoma into a new era of more inclusive, tech-savvy, and member-driven leadership.
As election fever builds, it remains to be seen how the veteran leaders and the young turks will navigate this transition.
One thing, however, is certain: the future of KUPPET in Bungoma will depend on its ability to adapt, include and empower—while holding firm to the core values that have defined its mission for decades.
