In a seismic shift that could redefine Kenya’s 2027 electoral landscape, speculation is mounting over whether ODM party leader Raila Odinga might endorse Edwin Sifuna—Nairobi Senator and Secretary-General of ODM—for the presidency.
If confirmed, such an endorsement would not only reunify a fractured Orange Democratic Movement but also present President William Ruto with perhaps his greatest political dilemma yet.
Sifuna: A Fresh Face With Deep Roots
Born May 22, 1982, in Kakamega County, Edwin Watenya Sifuna is 43 years old.
A trained lawyer, he holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
He was admitted to the roll of advocates in 2008.
Political Rise and Credentials
Sifuna was appointed Secretary-General of ODM in 2018, succeeding Ababu Namwamba.
After a narrow defeat in the 2017 Nairobi senatorial race, he won the seat in 2022 with 716,876 votes, defeating his UDA rival Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.
In February 2023, he became Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate.
He serves on key Senate committees and has sponsored legislation including the Office of the County Printer Bill (2022), the Energy (Amendment) Bill (2023), and the Sports (Amendment) Bill (2024).

The Luhya community—often called Kenya’s “sleeping giant”—has long been fractured between leaders such as Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula, both allied with President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Critics argue that these alliances have delivered little to the region. A Raila endorsement of Sifuna could unite the Western Kenya vote in an unprecedented way.
Such a move would likely spark a broader political realignment: revitalizing ODM, sidelining traditional Luhya kingpins, and complicating Ruto’s re-election strategy.
