Lawmakers Demand Answers Over Delays in Multibillion Nyota Jobs Program Amid Youth Unrest.

NAIROBI, Kenya (IP) — A storm is brewing in Parliament as lawmakers demand urgent explanations over the delayed rollout of the Nyota Jobs Program, a multibillion-shilling youth employment initiative once touted as a game-changer by the government.

The ambitious project, announced with fanfare earlier this year, promised to create hundreds of thousands of jobs for unemployed youth nationwide.

Months later, not a single job has materialized — and Members of Parliament are now questioning whether the government had the funds or the political will to implement the plan.

“This is not just a delay. It’s a betrayal,” said Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu during a heated session in the National Assembly.

“You cannot go around raising the hopes of millions of jobless youth if you know you don’t have the funds or a clear plan. It is dangerous. It breeds frustration, disillusionment, and even rebellion.”

Funding in Doubt

The Nyota Jobs Program was expected to absorb over 500,000 youth into short- and long-term roles through public works, innovation hubs, and SME support schemes.

The government initially announced a KSh 52 billion allocation, but the National Treasury has remained silent on disbursement timelines.

Lawmakers across the political divide are warning that continued silence could worsen public anger, especially among Generation Z, who recently spearheaded nationwide protests against economic hardship, police brutality and governance failures.

“We have seen what hopelessness can do,” said Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo. “This is not just a policy issue. This is about national security.

When youth feel cheated, they turn to the streets—not out of violence, but out of desperation.”

PR Over Policy?

Critics now accuse the government of launching the program as a public relations strategy to calm restive youth, rather than as a genuine employment intervention.

Some MPs allege the project was announced without undergoing basic feasibility assessments or being grounded in fiscal reality.

“The question is simple,” said Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie. “Why advertise a project of this magnitude if you didn’t have the money?

Either someone was being dishonest, or the government is completely disorganized. Either way, Kenyans deserve the truth.”

Youth Frustration Rising.

Kenya’s youth unemployment rate remains above 35%, with many graduates struggling to find meaningful work. For many, the Nyota Jobs Program was a beacon of hope.

“I had planned to leave the country, but Nyota gave me reason to stay,” said 25-year-old Nairobi graduate Maureen Atieno.

“They made it sound real. We even registered online. Now we’re being told nothing is happening? What do they take us for?”

On social media, hashtags like #WhereAreTheJobs, #NyotaLies, and #YouthDeserveBetter continue to trend, reflecting growing anger and disbelief.

Fallout and Investigations.

Several MPs are calling for the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee to probe the program’s finances, planning, and procurement. Others want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate possible misuse or misrepresentation of public funds.

Political analysts warn that the fallout could be severe if the administration doesn’t provide answers.

“This is more than a delayed project—it’s symbolic of a government that overpromises and underdelivers,” said Dr. Charles Otieno, a governance expert. “The youth are awake, aware, and organized. Any sense of betrayal will not go unchallenged.”

As Parliament reconvenes next week, pressure is mounting on the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Treasury, and the Office of the President to clarify the future of the Nyota Jobs Program.

Until then, Kenya’s youth remain in limbo—restless, disillusioned, and ready to act.

Ends.
