Kenyan President William Ruto joined global leaders in mourning the death of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, hailing him as a visionary leader and a staunch advocate for peace and environmental conservation.

“President Jimmy Carter was an extraordinary leader whose dedication to public service was epic.

He was a powerful champion for global peace and human rights. We are indebted to his pioneering voice on the actions for a healthy planet that has protected our nature and slowed climate change,” Ruto said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the people of the United States of America. Rest In Peace.”

Ruto’s heartfelt tribute reflects Carter’s enduring impact on international affairs, particularly in advancing human rights, resolving conflicts, and addressing environmental challenges.

His legacy inspired global admiration, with many leaders emphasizing the transformative role he played even beyond his presidency.

Carter’s presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant achievements in international diplomacy, including the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel and the Panama Canal Treaties.

Despite facing domestic challenges such as economic difficulties and the Iran hostage crisis, his commitment to human rights and peace remained steadfast.

After leaving office, Carter dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts through The Carter Center, an organization he founded to promote human rights and alleviate human suffering.

His work in global health, conflict resolution, and election monitoring earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Tributes have poured in from around the world. President Joe Biden described Carter as a “man of character, courage, and compassion,” noting that his lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in U.S. history.

Carter is survived by his children—Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy—11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and one grandchild.

A state funeral is scheduled for January 9, 2025, which President Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning.

Flags in America will be flown at half-staff for 30 days in honor of Carter’s legacy.

Ends.
