Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni are set to attend the official opening of the newly refurbished Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium on Jan. 2, 2025, in Siaya County.
The event will feature a friendly match between Gor Mahia, the record champions of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, and Uganda’s FUFA Big League champions Kitara FC.
Siaya Governor James Orengo confirmed the announcement following a meeting with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.
In a social media post, Governor Orengo said, “Central to the discussion was the upcoming Piny Luo Cultural and Sports Festival and the official opening of our stadium in Siaya, where we will be hosting President William Samoei Ruto and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.”
Originally, Gor Mahia was scheduled to face Tanzanian club Yanga SC.
However, Yanga withdrew due to a CAF Champions League group-stage match against TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo during the same week.
Kitara FC, winners of the 2023/24 Stanbic Uganda Cup, agreed to step in as replacements.
Kitara FC enters the match on the back of a 7-0 victory over Express FC in the Uganda Premier League, where they currently sit ninth.
Gor Mahia, on the other hand, is fourth in the FKF Premier League, just three points behind the leaders with a game in hand.
The match, part of the Piny Luo Cultural and Sports Festival, is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m.
The festival, an annual event, will primarily take place at Migwena Stadium in Bondo sub-county before concluding at the Siaya County Stadium.
Cultural activities during the event will include traditional food, sports like wrestling, boat racing, and ohangla and nyatiti music.
Ends.
