Government Moves to Clear Sh19 Billion NHIF Debt, Assures Faith-Based Hospitals

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to clearing the historical debts owed to healthcare providers, including faith-based hospitals, by the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that Sh5.05 billion has already been disbursed, with an additional Sh2.5 billion set to be released in the coming days. This payment is part of efforts to clear the outstanding Sh19 billion debt owed to various healthcare providers, which includes both public and private institutions, as well as faith-based organizations.

The issue of unpaid NHIF claims has been particularly concerning for faith-based hospitals, many of which, especially those run by the Catholic Church, are owed significant amounts. The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops recently criticized the government for failing to settle these debts, arguing that the delays have placed a heavy burden on vulnerable communities that rely on these healthcare facilities.

In response to these concerns, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa assured that the government is actively addressing the outstanding claims. The Social Health Authority (SHA), which now manages health insurance claims, is in the process of reconciling and clearing NHIF debts for the months of October and November 2024.

Mwaura emphasized that the government remains focused on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the ongoing transition to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). He noted that over 14 million Kenyans have already enrolled in SHIF, with many citizens reporting positive experiences with the new scheme. Mwaura also reiterated that these efforts will permanently transform healthcare access in Kenya, enabling all Kenyans to receive preventive, promotive, palliative, and curative services.

The government has expressed appreciation for the advocacy of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and assured that it values their role in highlighting the challenges faced by the healthcare sector and in promoting the well-being of all Kenyans.
