Eyes on the Prize: Musingu Revives Hopes of Clinching East Africa Schools Football Title

Kenya’s national champions, Highway, have reasserted their bid for the title with a 2-0 victory over Benjamin Mkapa High School from Tanzania.

Musingu High School coach Brendan Mwinamo is optimistic after his team secured a 4-0 win over Kakungulu of Tanzania in the ongoing FEast Africa Secondary School Games in Mbale and Bukedea, Uganda.

Polestine Okoth and Valentine Isalambo both scored in Musingu’s first regional championship win. “We drew 2-2 in the opening game against Amus College, which was the toughest match in our pool. My focus now is on the next game. We are taking it one game at a time, and I believe we are still in the hunt for the trophy,” Mwinamo said.

In other football action, Kenya’s national champions Highway resumed their campaign with a 2-0 win over Benjamin Mkapa High School. Humphrey Aroko and Peter Mutua were the scorers for Highway in the match held at Amus College in Bukedea District. Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s Kitale played to a goalless draw against Bukedea Comprehensive School.

In the girls’ volleyball category, St. Joseph’s Kitale defeated Tanzanite Girls 2-0, with Abigael Walubengo scoring both goals. Kenya’s Butere Girls also triumphed, overcoming Rines from Uganda 2-0, thanks to goals from Valencia Angela and Yvonne Adhiambo.

In girls’ basketball, Kenyan teams had mixed outcomes: national champions Butere upset Buddo 61-42, while St. Noa Girls from Uganda defeated Kaya Tiwi 62-46.

In girls’ handball, Moi Girls Kamusinga won against Kawanda from Uganda 20-14, while Kilombero of Tanzania triumphed over Kenya’s Murinduko 20-15, both matches held at Bukedea Primary School.

In boys’ handball, Kimilili from Kenya faced a narrow 23-20 defeat to Wampewo from Uganda, and Kenya’s Saniak struggled with a 24-22 loss to Bombo Army from Uganda. Hospital Hill drew 24-24 with Mbogo Mixed from Tanzania.

In boys’ volleyball, Bukedea Comprehensive School convincingly beat Kenya’s Hospital Hill 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-14), while defending champions Namwela overcame Tanzania’s Bugobwa 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22). Kwanthanze Girls advanced to the semi-finals unbeaten, defeating Kwantanze St. Alloys 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-12) and earlier winning against Seroma Christian School with scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-16.
