Kenya Faces Renewed Protests Amidst Political Turmoil

Kenya Faces Renewed Protests Amidst Political Turmoil
On Thursday, Kenya witnessed a resurgence of anti-government protests, marking another chapter in the country’s ongoing struggle for political and economic reform. The demonstrations, while smaller in scale compared to previous unrest, resulted in injuries and over 170 arrests, highlighting the persistent tensions between the government and its citizens.

A Return to the Streets
The protests erupted across six of Kenya’s 47 counties, driven predominantly by youthful demonstrators voicing their discontent with the current administration. In Nairobi, the capital, the central business district (CBD) came to a standstill as shops closed their doors and office workers stayed away, contributing to a significant disruption in daily life.

Public transport was notably affected, with matatu operators—private minibus drivers—ceasing operations out of safety concerns. Security forces clashed with protesters, using tear gas, rubber bullets, and, in some instances, live ammunition. These confrontations underscored the volatility of the situation and the government’s increasingly aggressive stance on maintaining order.

Voices of Discontent
Protesters articulated their grievances clearly. “We are fighting for a better Kenya. All we want is for our issues to be addressed, including increased unemployment among youth,” one demonstrator emphasized. This sentiment reflects the broader dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of economic and social issues.

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli addressed the unrest by urging protesters to adhere to lawful demonstrations. He assured that the government is committed to addressing the issues raised during previous protests but warned that unlawful actions would be met with firm responses.

Disruptions and Delays
The police implemented roadblocks on major routes leading into Nairobi to prevent protesters from reaching the CBD. This precaution, however, caused significant delays for commuters. Henry Mulei, a resident caught in traffic, described his frustrating experience: “I was heading to town from Ruiru in a public service vehicle, but we found a roadblock along the Thika superhighway. I sat in traffic for hours and had to return home.”

The Political Landscape
The protests are part of a larger context of political dissatisfaction. In July, President William Ruto undertook a significant Cabinet reshuffle, incorporating opposition members into his new administration. This move is seen as an effort to reset his government’s image and address the widespread public discontent that led to the recent demonstrations.

The unrest began in June following the introduction of the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which proposed significant tax hikes on essential goods and services. The bill, which aimed to raise 346.7 billion Kenyan shillings (approximately 2.7 billion USD), included increases on items such as bread and mobile money transfers. The backlash was immediate and intense, leading to violent protests and demands for government accountability.

In response to the uproar, Ruto dissolved his Cabinet in mid-July and called for patience with the new team. He emphasized the need for a “team of rivals” to enhance inclusivity and effectively tackle national issues.

Looking Ahead
Since the onset of the protests, over 50 people have died and 400 have been injured, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. The evolving nature of the protests—from initial opposition to tax increases to broader concerns about governance—demonstrates the deep-seated frustrations among Kenyans.

As the country navigates these turbulent times, the effectiveness of the new Cabinet and the government’s response to public grievances will be closely scrutinized. The ongoing protests reflect a critical moment for Kenya, highlighting the urgent need for meaningful reforms and a more responsive administration.
