Nairobi — The Junior Starlets are gearing up for their FIFA Under-17 World Cup debut by playing three friendly matches in Spain, including a matchup against Portugal. This training camp is crucial as they prepare for the tournament set to take place in the Dominican Republic next month.
The team arrived in Spain last week as part of their pre-tournament preparations. Their schedule includes a friendly against Valencia CF Women on Wednesday, followed by a match against Portugal on Friday, and wrapping up with a game against local side Intercity CF next Monday.
“Playing tough friendly matches will be key because they will help us measure up against opponents of a higher caliber, which is what we expect at the World Cup. It’s also important for us psychologically,” said coach Mildred Cheche.
Prior to their trip, the team engaged in a series of friendly matches against Premier League sides during a two-week training camp in Nairobi. This experience helped them refine their tactics and identify areas for improvement.
Midfielder Pearl Olesi expressed enthusiasm about the team’s experience in Spain, stating, “We’re really enjoying our time here. The training has been intense, and we’re looking forward to these friendlies. Our goal is to get positive results and sharpen our skills as we prepare for the World Cup.”
The FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup kicks off on October 16 and runs through November 3. The Junior Starlets will begin their group stage matches on October 18 against England, followed by a game against Korea DPR on October 20, and concluding their group fixtures on October 24 against Mexico.
Coach Cheche has set a minimum target of advancing beyond the group stage in their debut tournament.
