THE LAST ROLL CALL:A NATION RETURNS TO HONOUR DICKENS BULA

By Godfrey Wamalwa

On July 10, 2026, Orero Boys Senior School will host what is expected to be one of the most remarkable education gatherings in Kenya’s recent history as hundreds of distinguished professionals return to celebrate the life and legacy of former Chief Principal Dickens Bula, a man widely credited with nurturing generations of leaders.
The event is expected to draw former students, education stakeholders and friends of the veteran educationist from across the country. Lawyers, engineers, doctors, teachers, pilots, entrepreneurs, politicians, judges, clergy and senior public servants are among those expected to attend, united by one common bond—they once walked a path shaped by Bula’s leadership and mentorship.
For many, the gathering is more than a farewell ceremony. It is a celebration of a man whose influence extended far beyond the classroom, inspiring thousands of young Kenyans to dream bigger, work harder and serve society with integrity.
Dickens Bula’s distinguished career began to attract national attention during his tenure as Chief Principal of Oriwo Boys Senior School, where he built a culture of academic excellence, discipline and holistic education. Under his stewardship, the school earned widespread recognition for producing outstanding results while nurturing students who excelled in leadership, sports and other co-curricular activities.

His appointment to lead Orero Boys Senior School marked another defining chapter. There, he continued to transform lives by strengthening academic standards, mentoring teachers and creating an environment where learners were encouraged to pursue excellence in every aspect of life. His leadership philosophy centred not only on producing top grades but also on developing responsible, ethical and resilient citizens.
Former students often describe Bula as a visionary educator who saw potential in every learner. He believed that a student’s background should never determine their future and consistently challenged young people to pursue greatness through discipline, perseverance and hard work. His office remained open to students seeking guidance, while his commitment to fairness earned him respect from both learners and colleagues.
Today, the true measure of his success can be seen in the thousands of former students serving Kenya and the world in various professions. From courtrooms and hospitals to engineering firms, classrooms, cockpits, Parliament and boardrooms, many attribute their achievements to the values and mentorship they received under Bula’s leadership.
The July 10 celebration is expected to feature tributes from former students, fellow educators and national leaders, all reflecting on the profound impact he has had on Kenya’s education sector. The reunion will also highlight the enduring influence of dedicated school leaders in shaping the country’s future.
As Orero Boys Senior School prepares to host this historic occasion, the farewell to Dickens Bula will stand as more than the retirement of a respected principal. It will be a national celebration of a leader who transformed schools into centres of excellence and classrooms into launchpads for future leaders.
His greatest achievement is not found in the buildings he managed or the examination results he celebrated. It is found in the thousands of lives he transformed. That is why many believe Dickens Bula was more than a principal—he was the principal who raised a nation of leaders.
This version naturally reinforces the headline throughout the story, making the theme of Bula’s legacy the central focus.
