Rival factions of the Orange Democratic Movement held parallel rallies Saturday, escalating a leadership dispute that has exposed deep divisions within one of Kenya’s main opposition parties.
In Siaya County, supporters aligned with party leader Oburu Oginga gathered for a “Linda Ground” rally aimed at consolidating grassroots backing in the party’s traditional stronghold.
The event, held in his home region, drew large crowds and was framed as a show of unity and legitimacy amid an ongoing internal contest for control of the party.
Oburu told supporters the party remains stable despite internal disagreements and urged members to remain loyal to established party structures.
Leaders allied to him dismissed rival mobilization efforts as disruptive and unnecessary.
The Siaya rally unfolded as a competing faction led by Edwin Sifuna staged a separate “Linda Mwananchi” rally in Kakamega County, underscoring the widening rift within ODM.
Sifuna, who has challenged moves to remove him as secretary-general, has maintained that his push is intended to safeguard internal democracy.
His allies criticized the Siaya meeting and questioned the legitimacy of recent party decisions.
The parallel gatherings highlighted an intensifying struggle for influence within ODM as it positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
