KAKAMEGA, Kenya
What began as a routine stop on the “Linda Mwananchi” tour turned into a spectacle of teargas, defiance and competing narratives in Kakamega on Saturday.
Supporters of Edwin Sifuna, secretary-general of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), gathered at Amalemba Grounds for a rally framed as a grassroots defense of party ideals.
Instead, the event unfolded against a haze of teargas after police moved in, saying they had not received formal notification of the meeting, according to our IP reporter.
The disruption did not disperse the crowd for long.

The Spark
Tension escalated shortly before Sifuna’s address.
Police officers fired teargas near the venue, triggering panic in sections of the crowd as attendees scattered before regrouping.
In IP reporters footage , Sifuna was seen urging supporters to remain calm and avoid confrontation with officers.
Witnesses cited by our reporter said the rally continued despite the smoke, with chants of support rising as the senator took to the podium.

“No One Can Stop the Rally”
Sifuna told the crowd the Linda Mwananchi meetings would proceed nationwide, framing the confrontation as an attempt to intimidate supporters.
He called for restraint, cautioning attendees against throwing stones or provoking further clashes.
The Nairobi senator’s remarks came amid heightened tensions within ODM, where rival factions have been holding parallel grassroots events across the country, signaling internal competition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political analysts say Saturday’s confrontation reflects broader realignments within the party and the shifting balance of power in Western Kenya.

The Bigger Picture
Police officials, quoted by local news websites, maintained that event organizers had not formally coordinated security arrangements.
Organizers disputed that characterization, saying the rally was peaceful and constitutionally protected.
Observers note that clashes over political meetings have become increasingly common as rival factions test influence in county strongholds.
Despite the disruption, supporters remained at the grounds for hours, waving party colors and chanting slogans.

What Comes Next
The Linda Mwananchi tour is expected to continue in other counties, potentially setting the stage for further confrontations — or negotiations — between political organizers and security agencies.
Whether Saturday’s smoke signals a deeper fracture within ODM or simply another chapter in Kenya’s charged grassroots politics remains to be seen.
