KANDUYI, Kenya

Kanduyi Member of Parliament John Makali has played down his political rivals ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying his development record is sufficient to earn him another term.

Several aspirants, including journalist Zaccheus Mwasame and former long-serving MP Wafula Wamunyinyi, have declared interest in the Kanduyi parliamentary seat.

Wamunyinyi, who represented the constituency for more than two decades, unsuccessfully attempted to reclaim the seat in the 2022 General Election on a Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket, losing to Makali.

Speaking Wednesday at Namwacha Primary Junior School during the launch of five newly constructed classrooms funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), Makali urged residents to re-elect him, citing achievements in the education sector.

The Ford Kenya legislator pointed to the construction of modern storey classroom blocks in several schools across the constituency, as well as the purchase of school buses, which he said have eased student transport and are also used by the wider community during emergencies.

“The buses we distribute are not only for students and teachers but also serve the community whenever the need arises,” Makali said.

He took a swipe at former MP Wafula Wamunyinyi, saying the veteran politician had ample time to deliver development but failed to address key challenges.

“Please ignore my colleague and former MP Wafula Wamunyinyi. He served Kanduyi for many years, and there is nothing new he can offer that he did not do during his long stay in Parliament,” Makali said.

Makali cited Namwacha Primary Junior School as an example of an institution that had been neglected for years despite producing prominent leaders, including former MP Alfred Khang’ati.

He said he allocated Sh7.5 million for the construction of the five modern classrooms after learning of the school’s poor condition during a visit.

The MP cautioned residents against the misuse of social media, accusing some individuals of spreading misinformation and unfairly attacking leaders online.

He said concerns frequently raised on social media, including poor road infrastructure and electricity connectivity, were being addressed.

“The upgrading of roads in Kanduyi has already started. On electricity, Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi recently visited the area, and the last-mile connectivity program is ongoing,” he said.

On the sugar sector, Makali called on employees and farmers supplying cane to Nzoia Sugar Company to remain patient, saying the government was working to clear pending arrears.

He expressed confidence in the investor managing the factory, noting that other sugar mills under the same investor were performing well and paying farmers on time.

Makali said discussions with Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and the principal secretary during a recent National Assembly retreat in Naivasha concluded with assurances that mechanisms were in place to resolve outstanding debts owed to farmers.

He reiterated his commitment to development, urging residents to ignore political noise and focus on service delivery and progress in Kanduyi Constituency.

Ends.
