Lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has ignited fresh controversy after calling for the arrest and prosecution of President William Ruto over an alleged traffic violation, accusing authorities of tolerating impunity at the highest levels of power.
In a sharply worded statement shared online, Miguna said the president should be “arrested, charged, heavily fined” and the driver’s license suspended over claims that Ruto was driven on a public road without wearing a seatbelt.
Miguna argued that traffic laws must apply equally to all citizens, regardless of office.
The remarks followed the circulation of images and video clips on social media that appeared to show the president inside a moving vehicle without a visible seatbelt.
While State House has not issued a formal response to the claims, the episode has fueled debate about selective enforcement of the law.
Miguna, a vocal critic of successive administrations, said the incident symbolized a broader culture of immunity for senior officials, contrasting it with the strict enforcement often faced by ordinary motorists.
Road safety regulations in Kenya require all occupants of a motor vehicle to wear seatbelts on public roads, with penalties including fines and license endorsement for violations.
The controversy comes amid heightened public scrutiny of government conduct, with critics demanding accountability and supporters dismissing the claims as political theatrics.
