Ruto to Launch Nationwide Livestock Vaccination Campaign in January to Strengthen Sector and Expand Exports.

NAIROBI,KENYA.

President William Ruto has unveiled a groundbreaking nationwide livestock vaccination campaign set to begin in January 2025.

The program will vaccinate 22 million cattle and 50 million sheep and goats across all counties, aiming to control livestock diseases, improve breed health, and boost productivity nationwide.

Past vaccination efforts were limited by logistical challenges and uneven coverage, but the new initiative seeks to overcome these issues, benefiting farmers and the broader agricultural sector.

As part of a broader economic strategy to boost the livestock sector’s contribution to Kenya’s GDP, the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) will be central to the effort, improving both domestic consumption and export opportunities.

In 2021, Kenya’s meat exports were valued at over $75 million, and the government aims to increase its global market share to 5%.

Target markets include the Middle East, Europe, and neighboring African countries.

The vaccination program is set to have far-reaching benefits, not just in controlling diseases, but also in creating jobs within the livestock value chain.

By improving livestock health, the initiative will increase meat production, driving employment in veterinary services, processing plants, transportation, and retail.

It will also support rural economies where livestock farming is a primary source of income.

To ensure the success of the vaccination program, county governments, especially in Western Kenya, must play an active role in creating awareness well in advance.

Farmers need to be informed about the importance of the vaccination program, the types of diseases being targeted, and the timeline for vaccination.

County officials should collaborate with local farmers’ groups, cooperatives, and agricultural extension officers to disseminate information through community meetings, radio broadcasts, and social media platforms.

Awareness campaigns will help farmers prepare for the program, ensuring they have their livestock ready for vaccination and that they understand the benefits of vaccination for both animal health and their livelihoods.

Despite Kenya’s vast potential, it faces stiff competition from regional players such as South Africa, Uganda, and Tanzania.

South Africa dominates the continent’s meat export market due to its advanced infrastructure, while Uganda and Tanzania have made strides in livestock production and disease control.

However, Kenya’s new vaccination initiative, paired with strategic government investments, offers the country a chance to improve its competitiveness in the global meat trade.

As the vaccination program rolls out in January 2025, county governments in Western Kenya and beyond must work proactively to engage farmers and ensure the successful implementation of the program.

This effort has the potential to transform Kenya’s livestock industry, creating jobs, improving food security, and increasing the country’s share of the international meat market.

Ruto delivered the message while meeting the leadership of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party at State House Nairobi.

They were led by party leader and Mandera Senator Ali Roba and deputy party leaders Mohamud Mohamud (Marsabit Governor) and Hon Abdullahi Bashir Sheikh (Mandera North).

Ends.
