Opinion: Men Must Take Responsibility in Ending Violence Against Women.

By Mwibanda.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a critical global campaign aimed at raising awareness and sparking action to end violence against women and girls.

While this campaign calls upon everyone, men have a unique and pivotal role to play in achieving this goal.

Gender-based violence is not a women’s issue; it is a societal crisis deeply rooted in harmful attitudes, behaviors, and systems that men often perpetuate or ignore.

The time has come for men to step up, take responsibility, and be part of the solution.

Violence against women stems from patriarchal norms that normalize male dominance and control.

As men, we must confront these toxic ideas and recognize that our silence often enables violence.

It is not enough to say, “I would never harm a woman.” We must actively challenge the behaviors and beliefs in our communities that justify abuse, whether it’s physical, emotional, or economic.

One of the most significant steps men can take is to educate themselves and others.

Many men do not fully understand the breadth of violence women face daily, from domestic abuse to workplace harassment and online threats.

Listening to women’s experiences with empathy, without defensiveness, is the first step toward understanding the problem.

Beyond listening, men must challenge one another. When a friend, brother, or colleague makes a sexist joke or excuses abusive behavior, we must call it out.

Silence in the face of such attitudes is complicity. Similarly, teaching boys about respect, consent, and equality is essential in breaking the cycle of violence for future generations.

Men must also advocate for and support policies and initiatives that protect women.

This includes supporting shelters, hotlines, and community organizations that provide assistance to survivors of violence.

It also means voting for leaders and legislation that prioritize gender equality and hold perpetrators accountable.

Ending violence against women is not a challenge that women should bear alone. As men, we are uniquely positioned to transform the culture that enables such violence.

By becoming allies, advocates, and active participants in this movement, we not only support women but also redefine masculinity in a way that benefits everyone.

Let this year’s 16 Days of Activism mark a turning point.

Let it be the moment men take the lead in saying no to violence and yes to equality, dignity, and respect for all.
