BUNGOMA, Kenya
A KSh 136 million corruption scandal is rocking Bungoma County after Centerline Logistics Limited abandoned the construction of the multi-million shilling county headquarters.
This hs prompted furious demands for accountability from local leaders.
Bungoma Senator and Senate Majority Whip ,CBS David Wakoli revealed the details on Tuesday following an evening oversight visit to the stalled project site in Milimani.
The construction was scheduled for completion within 156 weeks (three years), but the contractor has deserted the site with virtually no progress made.
“What I witnessed is a blatant betrayal of the people of Bungoma,” Senator Wakoli said. “The contractor abandoned the site, leaving taxpayers with nothing to show for millions of shillings already paid.”
Financial records show Centerline Logistics Limited received three separate public payouts totaling KSh 136 million:An initial payment of KSh98 million,a second installment of KSh 16 million and a final payment of KSh 22 million
Wakoli directly challenged the county executive, led by Governor Kenneth Makelo Lusaka, to explain the missing funds and the stalled site.
“Taxpayers deserve accountability, transparency and value for their money,” Wakoli stated. “Those responsible should know that they will be held accountable. No one involved in this misuse of public resources will escape public scrutiny.”
The Governor’s office has not yet issued a formal response to the Senator’s findings.
Ends.
