Uganda’s elections have concluded, and President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner for a seventh term, extending his rule to an extraordinary 45 years.

For much of the country’s population — particularly young Ugandans — this marks a continuation of a political reality they have never known otherwise.

Museveni, who first took office in 1986 promising liberation and stability, now surpasses four decades of uninterrupted power.

Generations of Ugandans have grown up under his administration, witnessing elections that offer the appearance of choice but rarely result in meaningful change.

For the youth, who represent the majority of Uganda’s population, this election was a stark reminder that political power remains concentrated in the hands of the ruling elite.

While the president’s family and allies enjoy privileges of state power, millions continue to struggle with limited access to basic services, rising costs of living, and restricted civic freedoms.

Human rights advocates and international observers have raised concerns about the conduct of the election, citing reports of restricted opposition activities, arrests of political figures and constraints on media coverage.

Constitutional mechanisms designed to limit presidential tenure have been amended over the years, allowing Museveni to extend his hold on office.

The result raises broader questions about the state of democracy in Uganda. Rule of law, constitutionalism, and respect for human rights continue to be tested under a regime that equates political stability with the concentration of power.

The election outcome leaves many wondering whether Uganda’s younger generations will ever experience a leadership transition that offers genuine choice and freedom.

Forty-five years into Museveni’s presidency, Uganda faces the challenge of reconciling continuity with the aspirations of a population that has yet to inherit the political freedoms promised to their parents.

The country’s political trajectory now hinges on whether governance under Museveni will evolve or remain an extension of half a century of centralized power.
