President William Ruto was installed on Wednesday as an elder of the Luo community during a cultural festival in Migori County, a rare honor that highlights his growing political reach in the Lake Victoria region.
In a ceremony rich with ritual and symbolism, Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement leader Oburu Oginga Odinga were presented with traditional seats, shields, spears and other cultural insignia by Luo elders.
The rites symbolized trust, guidance, and protection, with elders also giving Ruto a traditional charm meant to safeguard his leadership.
Addressing the crowd, Ruto pledged to boost development in Nyanza, promising to end historical marginalization and ensure the region receives its fair share of national resources.
He highlighted plans to support infrastructure, cultural preservation and tourism initiatives.
Political analysts say the installation reflects shifting dynamics in a region long considered an opposition stronghold, particularly with realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
Critics, however, cautioned that symbolic gestures must be matched with tangible improvements in economic opportunities and services to translate cultural goodwill into lasting political support.
The festival, blending sport, music, and traditional rites, has increasingly become a focal point for political outreach in a region whose voting patterns could prove decisive in future national contests.
