A memorial football tournament honoring victims of the April 2, 2015, Garissa University terror attack has kicked off in Chebosi, Webuye.
Speaking during the launch, tournament patron Brian Anyanza said the family established the annual event to honor their brother, Tony Anyanza, who died in the attack.
“It was painful losing such a young man. That is why we resolved to create an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and find hope, even after losing one of their own,” Anyanza said.
He said the competition, dubbed the Tony Memorial Tournament, goes beyond entertainment and aims to expose young people to talent development centers, giving them access to competitive clubs locally and internationally.
His remarks were echoed by his sister, Barbra Anyanza, who said the tournament provides a platform for both boys and girls to develop their talents while also helping to curb gender-based violence.
“We use sports to keep young people engaged so they can discover the value of their talents instead of drifting into crime,” she said.
Also present was Manchester United fans’ chairman Antony Mukholi, who praised the Anyanza family for using sports to support community development and nurture young talent.
The tournament winner will take home KSh 35,000, with additional prizes and goodies awarded to participating teams.
The Garissa University College attack in 2015 left 148 people dead and at least 79 injured after terrorists opened fire on students, marking one of the deadliest terror attacks in Kenya’s history.
