Residents and leaders in Sironko District have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to create a new district centred in Budadiri and to upgrade Bududa Health Centre IV to district hospital status.

The petition was presented Sunday during Museveni’s visit to Sironko, where he met thousands of supporters and local leaders as part of his tour of the Bugisu sub-region.

Woman MP NRM aspirant Aisha Mafabi Nabulo said the people of Budadiri have for years walked long distances to access administrative services and healthcare in Sironko Town.

She urged the president to approve the creation of a new district to bring services closer to residents living in the mountainous areas.

“Our people trek for hours to reach health centres and government offices,” Mafabi said. “We are humbly asking for a new district to improve service delivery, especially in health and education.”

The gathering broke into applause as local leaders, including Sironko District NRM Chairperson Sulaiman Mafabi Lumolo echoed the request.

Lumolo commended President Museveni for his continued support for infrastructure and education in the region but said the people of Budadiri “deserve closer attention” due to their terrain and growing population.

President Museveni, who was accompanied by NRM officials and area MPs, thanked the residents for their support and said his government would review the petition.

He urged the community to continue focusing on income-generating activities and peace as the government studies the proposal.

The event featured traditional performances, speeches from local mobilizers and testimonies from youth and women groups who praised the president for expanding roads, electricity and schools in the Elgon sub-region.

Political analyst Joseph Mauso from the Eastern Eye media network praised the event’s organisation, noting that Sulaiman Mafabi and his team “did excellent mobilization that showcased strong grassroots support for the ruling party.”

The call for a new district adds to the growing number of administrative petitions in Uganda, as local leaders seek greater autonomy and access to resources.

Museveni’s visit to Sironko was part of a wider campaign to assess local development programs and strengthen NRM structures ahead of the 2026 elections.
