Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli on Wednesday called on county governments to immediately clear salary arrears owed to Community Health Promoters (CHPs), saying it is unjust for frontline health workers to serve without pay.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate, Wakoli said CHPs play a critical role in sustaining Kenya’s community health system and deserve timely compensation for their work.

“Today on the floor of the Senate, I firmly stood with our Community Health Promoters, demanding that County Governments clear their salary arrears,”

Wakoli said, according to the official Hansard record. “These frontline heroes sustain our community health system, and it’s unjust for them to serve without pay.”

The senator urged counties to “act swiftly and honour their commitment,” emphasizing that delayed payments demotivate workers and weaken primary healthcare delivery across the country.

Wakoli’s statement adds to growing calls from lawmakers and civil society groups for counties to prioritize payments to health workers who form the backbone of Kenya’s universal healthcare goals.
