BUNGOMA, Kenya
Onesmus Makhanu’s bid to become the Director of the Kenya Sugar Board for the Upper Western Region has received a major boost after winning the backing of Bungoma County Assembly Deputy Speaker Stephen Wamalwa.
Wamalwa, who also represents Soysambu Ward in the County Assembly, praised Makhanu’s leadership record and experience, calling him the most qualified candidate to help revive the struggling sugar sector.
“Mr. Makhanu has served in various regions across the country and has demonstrated unmatched dedication in public service,” Wamalwa said.
“As leaders from Bungoma, we are united in our support because we are confident he will represent the interests of our farmers and deliver on his promises.”
The endorsement came during the inauguration of the Holy Family Parish Brigadier Catholic Church, a ceremony led by Bishop Mark Kadima of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma.
Addressing the congregation, Wamalwa urged residents to rally behind Makhanu, saying strong and competent leadership was needed to restore the sugar industry’s former glory and protect the livelihoods of thousands of sugarcane farmers.
Makhanu’s candidacy comes at a time when Kenya’s sugar industry is reeling from years of mismanagement, declining productivity and delayed payments to farmers.
Stakeholders say fresh leadership at the Kenya Sugar Board could help stabilize the sector and steer it toward long-term sustainability.
The Kenya Sugar Board regulates and promotes the sugar industry.
The Director for the Upper Western Region plays a key role in policy implementation and farmer representation.
