Ruto, NBA Unveil Plans for World-Class Arena, “Presidential Courts” in Kenya

NEW YORK, Sept. 25

President William Ruto has announced a partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA) aimed at transforming Kenya’s basketball landscape including the construction of a multi-purpose arena in Nairobi and the rollout of four “Presidential Courts” across the country.

Speaking after a meeting with NBA Deputy Commissioner and COO Mark Tatum on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Ruto said the initiative will expand access to sports facilities, nurture talent and strengthen Kenya’s standing in Africa’s sporting map.

“We are building more than courts; we are building opportunity and ambition for the next generation,” Ruto said.

Arena in Railway City

At the heart of the discussions is a world-class, multi-purpose arena planned for Railway City, Nairobi, designed to host global basketball games, cultural events, and concerts. Officials say the project will also help reposition Nairobi as an African hub for sports and entertainment.

“Presidential Courts” for Grassroots
The NBA has proposed the construction of four Presidential Courts, two of which will be located in Kisumu and Tononoka, Mombasa.

These high-profile facilities are expected to serve as community anchors for youth leagues, training, and grassroots tournaments.

Tatum described the Presidential Courts as “symbols of access and opportunity” that will inspire young players while creating pathways into professional basketball.

Learning from Africa’s Best

Kenya’s push comes as African basketball powers such as Nigeria, Senegal and Egypt continue to dominate the continental game.

Nigeria has produced NBA stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo’s heritage roots and Hakeem Olajuwon, Senegal has invested heavily in the NBA Academy Africa in Saly, while Egypt boasts one of the oldest and most successful basketball federations in Africa.

Ruto said Kenya will borrow lessons from these countries to build a sustainable system that integrates infrastructure, training, and investment.

Stakeholders in the Room

The meeting was also attended by NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi, and Zaria Group co-founders Masai Ujiri — also President of the Toronto Raptors — and Andrew Feinstein, who are championing African sports infrastructure projects.

What’s Next

A technical team will begin site surveys and develop funding models in the coming months.

If successful, Kenya could join the ranks of Africa’s basketball leaders with a modern arena and grassroots facilities fueling future talent.
