NAIROBI, Kenya — A new wave of digital activism is sweeping Kenya as young people take to social media to expose corruption and demand accountability from government officials.
Born into a country plagued by joblessness, injustice and broken promises, Kenya’s boldest generation is no longer waiting for change.
They’re driving it themselves using social media platforms to track down corrupt officials and bring them to justice.
This generation, forged in crisis has grown up with a keen sense of injustice.
They’ve watched as their parents paid taxes for subpar public services attended vigils for friends killed by police, and struggled to make ends meet.
But rather than resorting to violence or apathy, Kenya’s youth are harnessing the power of social media to effect change.
They’re using TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms to expose budget discrepancies, dismantle propaganda and mobilize their peers.
The impact is being felt. Corrupt officials, once able to hide behind power and influence are now being held accountable in the court of public opinion.
Every scandal gets a hashtag, every thief gets a thread and every shady deal gets a spotlight.
The youth are connecting dots, tracking names and naming names.
They’re not waiting for commissions of inquiry or task forces; they’re becoming their own task force.
As one observer noted, “The looting class used to steal in silence. Now, every tender has eyes on it.”
The government would do well to take heed. Kenya’s youth are not going away.
They’re a force to be reckoned with, and they’re determined to bring about change.
