NAIROBI (IP).
Kenya’s energy regulator has shut down 17 fuel stations for selling adulterated products and engaging in illegal dumping of export-grade fuel.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) said the violations were uncovered during quality tests conducted between July and September. Out of 1,321 retail stations inspected, 17 were found non-compliant.
The affected stations were located in Kajiado, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Busia, Nandi, Meru, Homabay and Kilifi counties.
EPRA said infractions included mixing diesel with kerosene, exceeding sulfur content in petrol, and selling fuel meant for export in the local market.
Fourteen stations were closed, while three were fined. A station in Kilifi was permanently shut for suspected smuggling.
EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo said the enforcement is guided by the Petroleum Act of 2019 and aims to protect consumers and the environment.
The regulator urged the public to report suspicious fuel activity through a dedicated hotline and SMS service.
Ends.
