NAIROBI, Kenya .
Twelve foreign envoys, including ambassadors and high commissioners, on Tuesday urged all parties to act responsibly ahead of protests planned for Wednesday, marking the first anniversary of the 2024 Finance Bill demonstrations.
In a joint statement, the diplomats — representing Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden and Finland — emphasized the importance of peaceful protest while warning against any violence or disruption of essential services.
“June 25th marks one year since Kenyans voiced their concerns through widespread protests at the 2024 Finance Bill. We remember those who lost their lives and reaffirm every Kenyan’s right to peaceful assembly and to express themselves,” the statement said.
The envoys condemned the deployment of plain-clothed officers in unmarked vehicles, warning that such practices risk undermining public trust and violate court rulings.
They also raised alarm over reported use of hired thugs to infiltrate or sabotage peaceful protests, calling it a serious threat to Kenya’s democratic space.
The diplomats urged the government to ensure accountability for all violence during demonstrations, and demanded swift, transparent investigations into past incidents, especially those that resulted in injury or death.
The British High Commission, which took part in the statement, said diplomatic attention remains focused on Kenya’s handling of protests. It urged authorities to support peaceful commemorations and avoid any form of violence or intimidation.
Security has been tightened in Nairobi and other towns, with police maintaining they will facilitate lawful demonstrations while protecting critical infrastructure and public safety.
As Kenya prepares for another round of protests, the envoys called for calm, dialogue and mutual respect, stressing that a healthy democracy depends on citizens being free to express themselves without fear.
Ends.
