Bungoma’s Basketball Revival: KBF Lauds Senator Wakoli as Call for Better Infrastructure Grows.

Nairobi,Kenya.

The Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) has applauded Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli for organizing the Basketball Tournament 2024, set for Dec. 21-22 at Bungoma High School.

The event aims to identify and nurture grassroots talent, drawing scouts from teams across the country.

KBF official Caroline Masibo praised the initiative, noting that six girls’ teams and more than 16 boys’ teams are expected to participate.

“What Senator Wakoli is doing to elevate basketball in the county and the nation is truly commendable,” Masibo said. “We shall have scouts on-site ready to spot raw talent that would otherwise remain hidden in the villages.”

While Bungoma County has shown promise, particularly through schools like Friends School Kamusinga, which won the boys’ basketball title at the 2023 Western Kenya Secondary Schools Games, the county still lacks dedicated basketball facilities for training and development.

Many players rely on school courts, which are often overcrowded or poorly maintained.

The absence of independent courts and training grounds has hindered the county’s ability to consistently develop talent.

For Bungoma to become competitive with counties like Nairobi and Kisumu — which have hosted more tournaments in the past three years — investments in infrastructure are necessary.

Basketball courts at the ward level, funded by the county government and private sponsors, could provide young athletes with regular access to training.

These facilities would allow for consistent skill development and more frequent competitions.

Other countries offer examples of how such investments can pay off.

In the United States, widespread access to community courts, school leagues, and youth development programs — such as the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) — has produced NBA stars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

Professional teams, corporations, and local organizations often sponsor camps and tournaments, providing early exposure to competitive play and scouting.

Countries like Spain and Australia have also invested heavily in grassroots infrastructure and coaching, translating into international basketball success.

For Bungoma to replicate this growth, collaboration between the county government, private sector, and community leaders is essential.

Funding for courts, coaching programs, and regular tournaments could create a sustainable pipeline of talent.

Senator Wakoli’s initiative is a positive step forward.

With continued investment in infrastructure and grassroots programs, Bungoma could establish itself as a hub for basketball talent in Kenya.

Ends.
