For decades, the elders of Mt. Kenya stood as revered custodians of wisdom, moral compasses guiding their people through times of uncertainty. Their role as kingmakers and arbiters of disputes solidified their position as pillars of unity and leadership. However, today, this once-strong institution stands fractured, its legacy overshadowed by factionalism and political manipulation.
The art of kingmaking, once a source of pride and stability, has been reduced to a troubling spectacle of division. Instead of providing impartial guidance, the elders have allowed themselves to be co-opted into rival political camps. Personal interests and external pressures now dominate their decisions, creating a leadership vacuum that threatens to unravel the very fabric of the community they are meant to protect.
This is not just a matter of politics; it is a profound betrayal of trust. The elders, once trusted to rise above self-interest, now appear compromised. Recent attempts to unify the region around a single political voice have been marred by contradictory endorsements and infighting, leaving the community adrift. Where unity once prevailed, confusion and disillusionment now reign.
The impact of this failure is far-reaching. Without impartial guidance, the community risks deeper fragmentation. Leadership has fallen into the hands of political elites who prioritize self-preservation over collective progress. The erosion of trust in the elders has left a void, one that disillusions younger generations who once looked to them for inspiration.
This is a pivotal moment for Mt. Kenya. The elders must rise above the folly of division and reclaim their position as unbiased custodians of unity. To do so, they must reject external interference and focus on the long-term welfare of the community. Integrity, impartiality, and a commitment to collective progress must guide their actions.
Failure to act will consign the elders to irrelevance, remembered as symbols of a squandered opportunity. Yet, if they can rediscover their purpose and restore their credibility, they may still secure their legacy as the bridge between tradition and a brighter, more unified future.
The choice is clear, but the path is fraught with challenges. Whether the elders can rise to the occasion will shape not only the future of Mt. Kenya but its identity as a beacon of cultural and political leadership.
