r. Waqo Dulacha Ejersa has been appointed as the new CEO of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), taking over from Dr. Andrew Mulwa, who served in an acting capacity since March 2023.
Dr. Ejersa, a distinguished medical doctor, previously led the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Lung Diseases division within the Ministry of Health’s Department of National Strategic Public Health Programs. He brings over 25 years of experience in health policy formulation and implementation, both nationally and internationally.
A specialist in malaria, Dr. Ejersa ran for the Saku Parliamentary seat in the August 2022 elections but was unsuccessful. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Public Health from the University of Melbourne, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Strategic Planning from Edinburgh Business School.
Dr. Ejersa’s notable roles include leading the Department of Non-Communicable Diseases Programmes, where he chaired the interagency coordinating committee and spearheaded policy development and strategic planning to address non-communicable diseases.
As the former Head of the National Malaria Control Programme, Dr. Ejersa developed and implemented national malaria strategies, securing substantial funding and achieving comprehensive malaria control coverage.
His expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and governance has significantly improved accountability, transparency, and efficiency in health program implementation.
Dr. Ejersa’s outstanding contributions to public health were recognized with the Order of Grand Warrior of Kenya. He is also renowned for his work in strengthening community health systems and capacity building, having mentored numerous health professionals and influenced effective health policy formulation.
