Kocholia Parish Catholic Faithful Mark Annual Mavuno Week

By Reuben Olita

Amagoro Sub Parish Catholic faithful in Bungoma Catholic Diocese on Thursday, August 24th 2023 marked the annual Small Christian Community (Mavuno) week in the event that saw them contribute 10 percent of what they received from their harvests this season.

Eight saints in the sub parish, including St Francis, St Luke, St Anne, St Mary, St Gabriel, St Joseph, St Syphrose and St Peter held their Mavuno week at various venues in the sub parish.

Mr James Idewa.

St Francis held its function at the residence of its chairman James Idewa, presided over by Catechist Moses Okiring, who told faithful to be sincere and walk together as a small Christian family.

Mr Idewa said mavuno week is an annual event where Catholic faithful donate at least 10% of what they have harvested in the season, including maize, fingermillet, cassava or whatever they produce, noting that where no harvests have been made they can donate Livestock or chicken.

“The book of malaki is very categorical that Christians are supposed to uphold honesty while making their donations lest God can punish them in one way or the other either through hailstones or weevils that can cause havoc to their crops,” he said.

Mr Idewa said the hailstones that hit the area on Wednesday afternoon was random, but it could also be a punishment for giving what was not supposed to be given, urging Christians to be honest and unite as small Christian family.

Mr Idewa decried the culture of the youths for not attending churches and jumuiyas, noting that such culture should change since the church belongs to the youths. He attributed such scenarios to peer pressure and their failure to take advice or listen to their parents.

Regarding the Shakahola deaths, Mr Idewa said leadership comes from God; church leaders are supposed to withstand all evils and not go astray and mislead Christians into doing things that are contrary to Christian beliefs.
