Residents of Bungoma county and Kenya at large have been urged to participate in frequent blood donation exercises to facilitate boosting the blood bank to ensure sickle cell patients and those of other ailments who often fall victim of blood shortage are taken care of.
Speaking to the media today,Dr. Simon Kisaka, the Medical Supritendant of Bungoma County Referral Hospital said that Bungoma County has a huge shortage of blood as a result of high demand for blood from sickle cell patients and other ailments.

He said that residents should develop a culture of voluntary donation of blood as the ideal way to close the blood shortage gap adding that the availability of blood helps control severity of the condition.
In addition, he said that the former Western and Nyanza provinces have been severely affected by the shortage due to the high malaria infections.
However, he lauded the move by the county government of Bungoma to kick start the construction of a blood satellite center at Bungoma County Referral hospital(BCRH) adding that the availability of the center will help reduce over dependence on sourcing for blood from Eldoret and Kisumu cities .
His sentiments were reiterated by sickle cell anaemia experts present at the function who recommended establishment of satellite sickle cell clinics across the county to manage patients.
