NAIROBI, Kenya – Recent survey results from Timely Kenya reveal that Governors Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), George Natembeya (Trans Nzoia), and Gladys Wanga (Homabay) are the frontrunners most likely to be re-elected in the upcoming polls. The survey highlights their impressive performance over the past two years, based on a detailed devolution scorecard covering the period from 2022 to 2024.

Top Performers in the Spotlight

According to the survey, Governor Irungu Kang’ata leads the list with a notable approval rating of 62 percent, thanks to his impactful initiatives in health and education, including the Kang’ata Healthcare and TeleMedicine projects. Fatuma Achani follows closely with a 60 percent rating, driven by her successful Mwakalanga Water Project that benefits over 3,500 residents in Kwale County.

George Natembeya of Trans Nzoia ranks third with a commendable 58.9 percent. His Nawiri Fund and free milk program for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers have been particularly well-received. Gladys Wanga of Homabay rounds out the top four with a 58 percent rating, notably for her efforts in modernizing markets across her county.

Survey Insights and Key Findings

The survey, which sampled 14,065 respondents from all 47 counties, assessed various aspects of county governance and development. It identified the top-performing governors based on their flagship projects and overall impact.

Conversely, the survey also highlighted some of the least favored governors, including Kiarie Badilisha (Nyandarua), Achilo Ayako (Migori), and Adan Khalif (Mandera), with ratings of 29.1 percent, 29 percent, and 24 percent respectively.

The survey reveals a positive sentiment towards devolution, with 66 percent of respondents agreeing that it has been effective at the county level. However, there is also a notable divide on the management of health services, with 69 percent supporting the return of the health docket to the national government, while 31 percent advocate for its continued management at the county level.

Methodology and Execution

The study, conducted from August 20 to 31, 2024, utilized Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) to gather data. This methodology ensured a comprehensive assessment of county governance and development.
