Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei is currently recovering from severe burns following a horrifying attack by her boyfriend, Nickson Ndiema, in Trans Nzoia, Kenya. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and drawn attention to the darker side of domestic violence.
A Night of Horror
Cheptegei, who represented Uganda in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, suffered extensive burns after Ndiema allegedly set her on fire at their residence in Endebess. The attack reportedly followed a heated argument between the couple.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom detailed the grim events: “The couple was heard quarreling outside their home. During the altercation, Ndiema poured a flammable liquid on Cheptegei and ignited it. Ndiema was also caught in the fire and sustained severe burns.”
Both Cheptegei and Ndiema were rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret for emergency treatment. Initial reports indicate that Cheptegei has sustained burns covering approximately 75% of her body.
Investigation and Forensic Analysis
The police have launched an investigation into the attack. According to Commander Kosiom, the couple had ongoing disputes related to property issues. The investigation has revealed that Ndiema procured petrol, which he used in the assault.
Forensic experts found several items at the scene, including a five-liter yellow jerrican, a bag, and a black marvin, all believed to belong to Ndiema, as well as a burnt mobile phone presumed to be Cheptegei’s.
Community Reaction and Call for Justice
The attack on Cheptegei has stirred significant concern within the community and among fellow athletes. Rebecca Cheptegei’s parents, Joseph Cheptegei and Agnes Ndiema, expressed their shock and distress, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness and security measures to combat domestic violence.
The case has drawn comparisons to the tragic death of Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat, highlighting a troubling pattern of violence affecting athletes.
As Cheptegei focuses on her recovery, the community and her supporters continue to rally around her, calling for justice and an end to such acts of violence.
