Lake Victoria Tourism Poised for Growth as Regional Water Transport Expands

Tourism and investment opportunities around Lake Victoria are gaining renewed attention following major developments in regional water transport that stakeholders say could transform the lake into East Africa’s next major tourism and trade corridor.

The emerging tourism circuit linking Mwanza in Tanzania to Homa Bay and Kisumu in Kenya, and extending to Jinja in Uganda is increasingly being viewed as a strategic tourism and transport belt across the region.

Momentum grew after Tanzania unveiled the largest locally built ship on Lake Victoria at the port of Mwanza.

The vessel can carry about 1,200 passengers, more than 20 vehicles and up to 400 tonnes of cargo, making it the largest locally manufactured freshwater passenger and cargo ship in East Africa.

Regional tourism experts say the new vessel signals a shift toward strengthening lake transport infrastructure, which could significantly boost cross-border tourism, trade and hospitality investments.

Cities along the lake — particularly Kisumu — are expected to benefit from increased visitor traffic as improved water transport connects major ports and tourism sites across the lake basin.

Hospitality investors are already eyeing Kisumu as a key gateway city due to its growing urban infrastructure, expanding airport connectivity and proximity to several lakefront attractions.

Analysts say if regional governments continue investing in marine transport and tourism facilities, the Lake Victoria basin could soon rival some of East Africa’s most established tourism destinations.

The developments are also expected to strengthen economic ties among Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda while unlocking the vast economic potential surrounding Africa’s largest freshwater lake.
