SUNDAY COMMENTARY THE ONLY BUSINESS WHERE THE SELLER GOES HOME WITH BOTH THE PRODUCT AND THE MONEY

Someone once scribbled a clever riddle:
“Name the business where the seller goes back home with both the product and the money after selling.”

Many people quickly guess the answer: prostitution — often called the world’s oldest profession.

From a sarcastic economic view, it almost sounds like the perfect business model.

• No inventory loss
• No shipping costs
• No warehouse
• The “product” never leaves the seller

If modern startups operated like that, investors might call it the most efficient business model ever invented.
But beneath the sarcasm lies a troubling reality.

THE HIDDEN ECONOMY

While governments publicly condemn prostitution, entire sectors quietly benefit from the money around it.

Nightclubs, hotels, bars, taxis and nightlife entertainment often flourish around the industry.

In some places red-light districts are practically marketed as tourist attractions.

Money circulates rapidly — yet the people at the bottom, often vulnerable women and youth, rarely escape poverty.

THE CRIME ECOSYSTEM

Where prostitution thrives, other crimes usually follow:

Human trafficking
• Drug trafficking
• Money laundering
• Organized crime and gangs
• Sexual exploitation of minors
• Violence and extortion

In many cities the trade becomes a hub where several criminal networks intersect.

THE HEALTH AND PSYCHOLOGICAL COST

Behind the neon lights lies a serious public health burden.

Sexually transmitted infections, addiction, violence and psychological trauma are common realities.

Hospitals and social services eventually carry the cost through treatment, rehabilitation and mental health care.

Many victims suffer depression and, tragically, some end up in suicidal despair.

THE SILENT DEATH TOLL

Deaths linked to this industry rarely appear in the headlines.

They happen quietly — through violence, untreated disease, overdose and suicide.

They also occur one by one rather than on battlefields and they rarely receive the attention wars do.

Yet over time the numbers can rival or exceed casualties seen in many conflicts.

WHEN LEADERS FALL INTO THE TRAP

One uncomfortable truth is that the victims and participants are not limited to the poor.

History and modern scandals have shown that politicians, powerful businessmen and even religious leaders have been involved.

Even the Bible records such a moment.

In Genesis 38, Judah — one of the patriarchs of Israel — went to a woman he believed to be a prostitute.

The woman turned out to be Tamar, his own daughter-in-law, who had disguised herself.

When the truth came out, Judah admitted his wrongdoing and acknowledged that Tamar had been treated unjustly.

The story remains a reminder that moral failure can reach even respected leaders.

BIBLICAL WARNINGS

The Bible repeatedly warns about sexual immorality:

“For a prostitute is a deep pit.”

Proverbs 23:27

“Flee from sexual immorality… whoever sins sexually sins against their own body.”

1 Corinthians 6:18

“No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.”

Deuteronomy 23:17

These warnings were meant to protect individuals, families and communities from exploitation and destruction.

SUNDAY REFLECTION

So the riddle remains painfully accurate.

It is the business where the seller walks away with both the product and the money.

But society walks away with something else entirely — broken lives, organized crime, hidden deaths and moral contradictions.

Sometimes the most dangerous industries are not those that exist openly…
…but those society quietly learns to tolerate.

QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION

Is prostitution a:

A. Personal freedom
B. Economic reality
C. Social crisis we have normalized
