The accident scene on Mombasa road in Nairobi
NAIROBI, Kenya (IP)
Two people are feared dead following a fiery road crash along Mombasa Road in Nairobi on Sunday, authorities and witnesses said.
The accident, which occurred during peak traffic hours, involved at least one vehicle that burst into flames shortly after impact.
Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from several kilometers away, as stunned motorists watched from a distance.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and worked to contain the blaze and clear the wreckage.
Officials at the scene said two people were believed to have died, though formal identification and notification of next of kin were still underway.
The crash caused major traffic disruption along the busy highway, a key transport corridor linking Nairobi’s central business district to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the industrial area. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes and expect significant delays.
Mombasa Road remains one of Nairobi’s most accident-prone highways due to heavy traffic volumes, high speeds and frequent congestion.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority, thousands of road crashes are recorded annually across Kenya, with major urban highways accounting for a significant share of fatalities.
Efforts to obtain comment from traffic police on the cause of the accident were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
Authorities all along have been urging drivers to exercise caution on the road , particularly during high-traffic periods.
